Training situation at Melrose Kennels Melrose Kennel training program is designed for the companion gun dog and National Shoot to Retrieve (NSTRA) type gun dog competition. Our training grounds consist of 10 groomed acres to enhance objective cover hunting, developing confidence in scenting ability and field control. Great emphasis is made to make dog training a very positive, rewarding experience; which results in a more stylish, bolder dog in the field. Our program is in two phases: Yard Work: Whoa; Heel; Easy-Up; Signal Field Work: Introduction to gun; Introduction to birds; Commands; Retrieving Field work is pointing and retrieving while implementing yard work commands in the field. I have finished several field champions. Training is done exclusively by me, Russ Guevel, owner of Melrose Kennels. With this hands-on approach I know exactly what the dog's performance is at any particular phase of training.
